How We Create False Memories: Assessing Memory Performance in Older Adults

چکیده
Washington, DC (November 4, 2011)-A new study in Psychological Science , a journal of the Association for Psychological Science , published online October 26 addresses the influence of age-related stereotypes on memory performance and memory errors in older adults. Ayanna Thomas, assistant professor of psychology and director of the Cognitive Aging and Memory Lab at Tufts University, and co-author Stacey J. Dubois, a former graduate student at Tufts, set out to investigate how implicitly held negative stereotypes about aging could influence memory performance in older adults.

The influence of perceptual similarity and individual differences on false memories in aging.
Previous false memory research has suggested that older adults' false memories are based on an overreliance on gist processing in the absence of item-specific details. Yet, false memory studies have rarely taken into consideration the precise role of item-item similarity on the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying perceptual false memories in older adults. In addition, work in our laborat...
متن کاملAutobiographical Brand Images Give a Higher Chance to False Memory as Compared to Neutral Images
Consumers’ prior experiences shape an episodic memory which largely influences their decision-making process. This episodic memory is mainly linked to cognitive and emotional perception and we know that a brand image influences our cognitive and emotional perception. Nevertheless, it has not been well described how autobiographical memories of brand images differ from those of other types of im...
متن کاملSource monitoring 15 years later: what have we learned from fMRI about the neural mechanisms of source memory?
Focusing primarily on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), this article reviews evidence regarding the roles of subregions of the medial temporal lobes, prefrontal cortex, posterior representational areas, and parietal cortex in source memory. In addition to evidence from standard episodic memory tasks assessing accuracy for neutral information, the article considers studies assessing ...
متن کاملFalse Remembering in the Aged
Researchers studying human memory have increasingly focused on memory accuracy in aging populations. In this article we briefly review the literature on memory accuracy in healthy older adults. The prevailing evidence indicates that, compared to younger adults, older adults exhibit both diminished memory accuracy and greater susceptibility tomisinformation. In addition, older adults demonstrate...
متن کاملThe Effects of Feedback on Memory Strategies of Younger and Older Adults
Existing literature suggests that feedback could effectively reduce false memories in younger adults. However, it is unclear whether memory performance in older adults also might be affected by feedback. The current study tested the hypothesis that older adults can use immediate feedback to adjust their memory strategy, similar to younger adults, but after feedback is removed, older adults may ...
